Understanding Powerlessness

You accept that you can’t continue drinking alcohol or using drugs and that you have absolutely no control when you’re using. You’re also embracing your need to learn what led you to become addicted in the first place, the thoughts and behaviors that fuel your addiction and what you must do to achieve and maintain sobriety. Understanding powerless, that I had no choice, changed my life. It wasn’t until I had a full understanding of this word that my spiritual journey really was able to begin. It also made me realize that I’m not a bad person or a weak person. I finally understood what an alcoholic and addict really is.

Mental Health Issues

  • Some people believe AA is intricately tied to religion by seeking a “higher power.” Rather, AA members are encouraged to understand they’re powerless in changing their addictive behavior.
  • When you are 2 or 10 or 20 years sober, you are still going to be powerless over alcohol.
  • It’s so easy to blame other people for our problems, but recovery requires us to take personal responsibility, and that’s exactly what Alcoholics Anonymous teaches.
  • A medical detox will help you safely and comfortably withdraw from drugs & alcohol.
  • Like the fly that was drawn to the pitcher plant by its sweet smell and vibrant color, our curiosity for alcohol begins with a harmless, even glamorous, impression of what the liquid in the bottle represents.

Many people find it so helpful that they continue to meet with the group in order to help others as they work to maintain their own recovery. Some people believe AA is intricately tied to religion by seeking a “higher power.” Rather, AA members are encouraged to understand they’re powerless in changing their addictive behavior. In fact, many members don’t perceive a need for a “higher power.” Instead of seeking spirituality, which helps in recovery, they seek assistance from the AA fellowship. According to Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions (1981), “Our admissions of personal powerlessness finally turn out to be firm bedrock upon which happy and purposeful lives may be built” (p. 21). Your health insurance provider may be able to cover all or part of the cost of inpatient and/or outpatient rehab. Those who are trying to get sober sometimes feel ashamed if they slip up and have a drink.

Step 1 in AA and Al-Anon Programs Is Honesty

Admitting Powerlessness Is a Form of Strength

  • Here is a breakdown of the principles that match up with each step and how to practice them in a way that helps you create sustainable sobriety within the tenets of AA and NA.
  • And the crucial ingredient is willingness. In an age where others are always to blame for problems, it can be difficult to recognize personal responsibility in a program of recovery.
  • Admitting powerlessness means accepting what is true and what is not.

When you’re humble, you’re cognizant of the fact that you’re not a major part of the bigger picture. Humility in daily practice means never seeing yourself as more important than you are. In step 4, you made a catalog of your past, and in step 6, you admitted them and released yourself from the guilt and shame. In step 8, you ask God, or another higher power, for forgiveness. In step 6, you have to prepare for your sins to be taken away by admitting to yourself that you’re fully ready to move past them.

  • Cravings can become very strong for a person who has an addiction to alcohol.
  • The way to carry this principle forward is to always remind yourself that you’re at the mercy of a higher power, and you don’t come first.
  • Let’s face it when we control it, we’re not enjoying it, and when we’re enjoying it, we’re not controlling it.
