We study 51,179 people who take Alcohol or have Sneezing. No report of Sneezing is found in people who take Alcohol. Quercetin is a plant pigment that has been shown to cause sneezing in some people. People should note, however, that its authors do not propose that this means that alcohol causes allergies.
It may sometimes feel as if you’re sneezing for no reason, or at least for a reason has yet to be fully studied scientifically. For the hundreds of viruses known collectively as “the common cold,” sneezing is often a major symptom. People can be allergic to all kinds of foods, plants, and substances, sneezing when drinking at different levels of severity. Generally, sneezing alone is not a sign of a serious problem, unless it is accompanied by other symptoms. When you sneeze, you are experiencing a sudden, forceful burst of air through the nose. Finally, I’ll explain when to talk to a medical provider about sneezing.
In these situations, people can help manage their reaction to it by using over-the-counter (OTC) medications that can help with allergic reactions. Another more recent study assessed allergy and allergy-like symptoms following wine consumption. They found that more people reported symptoms following the drinking of red wine than of white wine. One 2005 study surveyed people who experience upper airway symptoms in response to alcohol. Reported symptoms included nasal congestion and sneezing.
Or you may have an alcohol allergy, a stronger reaction that involves the immune system. If you’re allergic to another ingredient contained in certain alcoholic products, switching to a different drink might be an option. For example, barley is typically found in beer but not wine. If you have an allergy, your immune system over-reacts to contact with a trigger or “allergen.” If you have an alcohol allergy, your immune system treats alcohol as a threat. It responds to alcohol by producing antibodies known as immunoglobulin E (IgE). These antibodies trigger an allergic reaction in your body.
If you have severe allergies, your doctor might recommend that you receive allergy shots. Allergy shots contain the extracts of purified allergens. Exposing your body to allergens in small, regulated doses helps keep your body from reacting to allergens in the future. One of the best ways to keep from sneezing is to avoid things that trigger you to sneeze. You can also make some simple changes in your home to reduce irritants.
